Warehousing operations, integral to modern supply chains, are significant contributors to energy consumption. Traditional approaches to enhancing energy efficiency often focus on upgrading physical infrastructure, which is cost-intensive and time-consuming. The advent of smarter Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) offers a new paradigm by optimizing workflows and minimizing energy wastage through data-driven configurations. This manuscript explores the role of advanced WMS in reducing energy consumption, with emphasis on features such as inventory slotting, dynamic task interleaving, and material handling equipment routing. A mixed-methods approach combining literature review and case studies demonstrates the potential of smarter WMS configurations in reducing operational costs and environmental impacts. The study concludes with recommendations for adopting smarter WMS configurations and discusses the scope and limitations of these systems in achieving sustainable warehousing practices.
